About this role
Assesses complex life insurance applications and claims, determines risk and acceptance terms, and supports underwriting standards, processes and team capability.
We are looking for an experienced life insurance underwriter to join our Underwriting team. You will assess complex risks, make informed underwriting decisions and contribute to the development of underwriting standards and processes, helping to deliver excellent customer and business outcomes. The main responsibilities for the role holder will include:
Assessing life insurance applications and claims, including complex and high-sum assured cases, by reviewing medical, financial, occupational and lifestyle information to determine risk and acceptance terms. Supporting the development and application of underwriting philosophy, governance standards and best practice to ensure consistent, high-quality decision making.
Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives, including process enhancements, automation opportunities and system developments across underwriting and claims. Supporting capability development within the team through coaching, case reviews, knowledge sharing and feedback. Building effective relationships with reinsurers, intermediaries and internal stakeholders, including supporting client meetings and training activities where required.
Maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements, company policies and quality standards through robust risk assessments and audit activities. To ensure that this role is carried out to the desired level, the successful candidate will need the following skills and experience:
A minimum of 7 years' underwriting experience within the individual protection or life assurance market Proven underwriting authority across a broad range of risk areas, including experience handling complex and high-value cases. Strong knowledge of life assurance products, underwriting principles, risk assessment and reinsurance practices An excellent understanding of the protection distribution market and wider industry landscape Strong commercial awareness with the ability to balance risk management and business objectives.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills, with sound professional judgement The ability to work effectively under pressure whilst maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. Strong communication, negotiation and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships internally and externally Experience supporting process improvements, change initiatives and capability development activities.
GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent) at Grade C or above. Professional qualifications such as ACII, Dip CII, ALU or equivalent would be advantageous.
